Building Location: Harrisburg, PA
On Front Street, by the Susquehanna River

The task was to select any current issue or topic that we are passionate about, and re-design an existing building in a way that contributes to solving or improving that issue.
As a bilingual student, language learning is a topic I have always been interested in. I have noticed the strengths and weaknesses of current foreign language programs in the U.S.
Learning other languages has so many benefits , such as cognitive, in the workplace, and in everyday lives in our increasingly interconnected world.

Final Floor Plans -

  • This Learning center will consist of 12 different language programs, for all ages an proficiency levels, and students will also learn about the different cultures.

  • My design will hopefully contribute as an improvement to our current foreign language programs, and be an environment that enhances and promotes language learning.

  • In my research for designing language learning spaces, and learning spaces in general, I found that it is most beneficial to have interactive elements (such as the Virtual reality stations) and collaborative spaces (such as the lounge). Language is best learned through speaking practice.

"Cultural Curiosity"

Design Concept

Having the desire and interest to learn and experience other cultures; to question and explore things/ideas.

Color & Design Style

  • Because this building is all about culture and languages, diversity and unity, I want to make sure that the final design encompasses that by combining styles from around the world. Mid-century modern,
Scandinavian, modern, and industrial seemed to be the most popular design styles gloabally.

  • Similarly, colors have different meanings in different cultures. They have different symbolism & connotations, I wanted to make sure to do research on it so that my final design utilizes colors with an overall positive meaning. I determined that the colors with positive meanings / connotations across
most cultures were orange, green, and purple.

Wayfinding

Inspired by the Olympics, I chose to communicate directional information throughout the space using pictograms, that way the messages are universally understood.

The space will serve as a celebration of culture, showcasing what makes each so unique, while emphasizing unity. It will foster a positive learning environment, where people will find personal growth. The space will highlight the importance of learning other languages.

Preliminary Work -

This gallery provides a look at some of the preliminary design work and sketching done during the initial phases of this project. This process also included an extensive research project on my topic.
